Dive Brief:

  • Northwestern Mutual appointed Beth Rodenhuis as EVP, COO and business architect, the company said Tuesday. Rodenhuis will oversee the financial services firm’s technology and digital strategy, including platform and operating model design, technology health and enterprise architecture.
  • Rodenhuis is returning to the company after a six year stint at Capital Group, where she served as SVP and global head of digital products and capabilities. Prior, she spent nearly 14 years at Northwestern, serving in a number of leadership roles including chief transformation officer.
  • Dave Gordon, who was appointed as chief digital and information officer in December, departed earlier this year, Northwestern said in a Thursday email. The company does not plan to fill Gordon’s role, according to a spokesperson.

Dive Insight:

The COO appointment at Northwestern Mutual comes just over six months into the tenure of CEO Tim Gerend, who ascended to the top leadership position after the retirement of longtime chief John Schlifske. In February, Gerend also became chairman of the company’s board of trustees.

In her new role, Rodenhuis will report to Gerend and join the company’s senior leadership team. Gerend highlighted the executive’s familiarity with the company and the financial services sector.

“She brings demonstrated success in bringing together business and technology teams to improve the advisor and client experiences, which will be beneficial as we continue to provide financial security through trusted advisors and a comprehensive planning approach that brings together insurance and investments,” said Gerend in the Tuesday announcement.

In 2024, the company showcased its use of Amazon Bedrock to deploy several AI agents in support of its software development work. Agentic systems provide documentation assistance to Northwestern Mutual developers, evaluate pipeline failures and help manage repositories, among other tasks, the company said in the presentation.

Insurers are rapidly embedding AI into their broader technology strategies, according to an Evident Insights study published in June. Novel use cases for the technology include computer vision for auto claims, a wildfire risk detection tool and a platform that summarizes lease documentation, according to the report.

Northwestern Mutual, a privately-held company, disclosed in February it reached $38 billion in revenue during 2024, up more than 5% year over year.
