Dive Brief:

  • State Farm appointed Joe Park as EVP and chief digital and information officer Wednesday. Park will begin his tenure in October, reporting to President and CEO Jon Farney, the insurance company said in an announcement.
  • Park served for 18 months as chief digital and technology officer at Yum Brands, where he directed technology strategy for the company’s KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Habit Burger restaurant chains. The executive was also president of Byte by Yum, an AI-driven franchise-management platform rolled out in February.
  • Yum promoted Jim Dausch to fill the two roles vacated by Park, according to a Monday announcement. Dausch was hired by Yum in December as global chief digital and technology officer for its Pizza Hut chain.

Dive Insight:

Park’s recruitment coincides with an industrywide AI adoption push. Major insurers, including State Farm, are moving generative AI pilots into production with a focus on using natural language processing, virtual assistants and knowledge-management models to automate claims processes and improve customer service.

“After several years of getting organized, building capabilities and proving out [proofs of concepts], industry leaders are seeing outcomes at the use case level begin to add up,” Evident Insights said in its inaugural insurance industry AI index benchmarking report, published in June.

State Farm ranked 15 for AI maturity among 30 of the largest insurers across North America and Europe analyzed by Evident but surpassed the others in AI patents filed.

The firm’s AI initiatives were spearheaded by State Farm’s former Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Fawad Ahmad, according to a Bain and Co. interview published in November. Ahmad spent nearly a decade in tech leadership roles at State Farm before taking the chief operating and customer position at ADT in March.

“We’re intentionally building our capabilities in a crawl, walk, run fashion, ensuring that they can extend across different areas of our business. At the same time, we’re setting — and achieving — bold, near-term goals, such as scaling minimum viable product solutions in the first 12 to 18 months,” Ahmad told Bain, pointing to a digital knowledge assistant for contact center employees the firm developed.

Prior to Ahmad’s departure, State Farm SVP and CIO Ashley Pettit announced her retirement, effective Dec. 1, 2024,, after more than three decades with the company in various IT leadership roles, according to a message she posted on LinkedIn in June 2024.

State Farm did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the leadership changes. However, Farney lauded Park’s technical expertise and strong leadership in the announcement Wednesday, stressing the company’s commitment to improving customer experience.

Farney rose to CEO after more than 30 years with the company in March 2024.
