Amazon Web Services’ global data center leader, Kevin Miller, has left the cloud giant after 17 years. Here’s what you need to know as AWS continues to invests billions in cloud infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services’ longtime innovator and the current leader of its global data centers practice, Kevin Miller, has departed the cloud giant after nearly two decades at AWS.

“The last 17 years working in Amazon have taken me on a journey of ever-changing challenge, discovery, and revelation,” said Miller in a recent LinkedIn post announcing his departure, which has garnered over 330 comments.

Miller was vice president of AWS’ Global Data Centers business, which the company has been pouring billions of dollars into annually in an effort to expand its customer and AI reach on a global basis.

For example, AWS has committed tens of billions in investments to expand its cloud infrastructure both in the U.S. and abroad this year including: $13 billion in Australia, $8 billion in India, $10 billion in North Carolina and $20 billion in Pennsylvania.

In his role, Miller led AWS’ global data center organization, from land to design, engineering, operations, automation, as well as AWS’ energy portfolio and sustainability investments, according to his LinkedIn profile.

AWS is expected to spend $100 billion in 2025 alone ramping up its infrastructure for AI, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the company’s quarterly financial earnings call in February.

“When AWS is expanding its capex, particularly in what we think is one of these once-in-a-lifetime type of business opportunities like AI represents, I think it’s actually quite a good sign, medium to long term, for the AWS business,” Jassy said.

Miller Was GM Of Amazon S3

Prior to leading AWS global data centers business unit, Miller was vice president and general manager of Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for several years.

Amazon S3 is the company’s flagship object storage service that allows users to store and retrieve any amount of data, from anywhere, at any time.

Miller first joined Seattle-based AWS in 2008 as a software development manager.

By 2015, he had risen through the executive ranks to become director of software development for high-scale EC2 virtual networking features. Miller also held the role of general manager for Amazon Glacier, the company’s storage service for long-term data archival.

“Every page turn [at AWS] has brought excitement and growth, compelling me to read the next chapter. Yet soon, I am closing the large volume that is my Amazon career,” said Miller in his LinkedIn post.

“No doubt I could have continued with another chapter, and another. Alas! I was drawn to the words of a new chapter, in a new volume, and have decided that it is time to begin writing those words,” he said.

AWS did not respond by press time on who Miller’s replacement will be.

Miller has yet to announce where he will land next.
