Dive Brief:

  • Boeing tapped Dana Deasy as its chief information digital officer and SVP, IT and data analytics, effective Dec. 31, 2024. Deasy will report to Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg, according to a Friday announcement.
  • The aerospace company tasked Deasy with overseeing IT, information security, and data and analytics. Deasy replaces former CIO Susan Doniz, who departed the company at the end of 2024.
  • In addition to his most recent role as CIO for the Department of Defense, Deasy has held multiple leadership positions across industries, including stints at JPMorgan Chase, BP and General Motors.

Dive Insight:

Ortberg took over as CEO of the aerospace giant in July 2024, laying out a plan to revamp company culture in the wake of a manufacturing safety crisis.

“The trust in our company has eroded,” Ortberg said, speaking in an earnings call in October 2024. “We’ve had serious lapses in our performance across the company, which have disappointed many of our customers. But by the same token, we have great opportunities ahead.”

Prior to the quality control controversy, the company suffered a cyberattack. Russia-affiliated ransomware group Lockbit 3.0 took credit for leaking stolen Boeing files in November 2023.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI later confirmed the threat actor exploited a vulnerability called CitrixBleed to infiltrate company systems and retrieve data.

Cybersecurity remained a key IT concern for the company as it welcomed its new tech chief.

“With the need to stay vigilant to protect against cyber threats, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence playing a larger role across all industries, our IT team will have a key role as we focus on meeting our safety and quality goals, delivering reliably for our customers and positioning ourselves for the future,” Ortberg said in the Friday announcement.
