AI agents: Transforming software testing with intelligent automation

A wave of AI Agents is taking over all digital businesses, from handling customer queries to making reservations for an event. While every business and consumer is leveraging AI agents in one way or another, AI agents like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI are accelerating developer workflows. Which brings us to the main question? If AI Agents are transforming development, what’s in store for software testing?

AI agents are revolutionizing the way we do software testing. Rather than replacing human testers, they augment human expertise, taking on repetitive or time-consuming tasks and allowing testers to focus on decision-making, risk assessment, and creative problem-solving.

Current State of Software Testing With AI

Intelligent automation in software testing using AI agents is an umbrella term used for multiple processes working together in this space. According to a survey by Fortune Business Insights, the global market for AI-enabled testing was valued at USD 856.7 million in 2024 and is expected to grow to USD 1,010.9 million in 2025.

The reasons for this massive growth are simple. Efficiency!! Teams are prominently leveraging AI for automated RCA, generating test reports, test case generation, self-healing test scripts and more! The most popular approach is to author tests using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to eliminate technical barriers around programming languages and complex logic from test cases.

As per the Future of Quality Assurance report, test case creation is one of the most used use cases of AI, particularly among medium (48.80%) and large organizations (48.60%), directly impacting the test coverage as compared to manual test case creation.

Enhancing Existing Tests and Workflows Using Generative AI

Generative AI agents can be used to convert code from one language to another in case the language becomes less prevalent in the domain or new engineers in the team come with other language experience.

They are also used to create newer tests (especially covering edge cases) to increase the test coverage of an existing suite or modify existing tests based on recent changes, also called self-healing, a core Generative AI capability.

Using Generative AI agents for tasks like generating new tests or updating existing ones requires far less time and effort compared to doing everything manually. GenAI native test agents, such as LambdaTest KaneAI, provide end-to-end testing capabilities.

It allows teams to plan, create, and evolve tests using natural language, which makes the process faster and easier to maintain. While these tools cover a wide range of common testing scenarios, attempting to build and maintain a custom Generative AI testing agent in-house can be very costly and resource-intensive.

Test Orchestration and Analysis Using Predictive AI

The second part of the software testing phase, after test creation, is execution and analysis. While test orchestration handles tasks like device selection, environment setup, CI/CD integration, and log collection, techniques such as Predictive AI focus on analyzing historical test results and code changes to forecast potential failures, detect flaky tests early, and identify high-risk areas that require attention.

Let’s take an example of an AI-native Test Intelligence platform by LambdaTest. These platforms leverage Predictive AI to move beyond basic reporting, automatically detecting flaky tests, classifying failure types, and identifying anomalies across test executions.

By applying predictive analytics, the platform can perform root cause analysis and failure categorization with precision, filtering out noise and highlighting the issues that genuinely require attention.

Further, Predictive AI helps teams make smarter, data-driven decisions by analyzing trends and anticipating potential failures. For example, the LambdaTest platform provides insights that leverage these AI capabilities to consolidate real-time execution data into a single, unified view, breaking down silos and empowering teams to act on insights more efficiently and confidently.

Another example is that platforms like HyperExecute can bring down the test execution time to 70% through AI, handle test orchestration from different environments, run an MCP server through the agent, and handle logging and reporting simultaneously. This is all a testing team needs when they are moving towards AI and shifting their approach towards intelligent test automation.

Future of AI Agents in Software Testing

In the future, AI agents are expected to interact with software more like a human would, understanding workflows and user behavior to identify issues that are often missed by traditional testing.

Ultimately, the goal is to build AI agents that can handle the majority of testing tasks on their own, leaving only high-level decisions like prioritizing risks or interpreting results to humans.

A key step in that direction is agentic testing, where agents are not only responsible for testing software but also for testing other agents. This layered approach creates a self-sustaining ecosystem in which AI agents continuously validate, refine, and strengthen each other.

Platforms like LambdaTest are bringing this concept to life with their Agent to Agent Testing platform, where AI agents, including chatbots and voice assistants, can be tested across real-world scenarios.
