Dive Brief:

  • Google is offering businesses ways to manage AI costs through expanded flexible billing options, cost controls for AI agents and inclusion of developer platforms Google Antigravity and Android Studio AI within Gemini Enterprise subscriptions, the tech giant said in a Wednesday blog post.
  • The new payment options include a flexible savings plan that lets companies commit to a set monthly spend if their AI workloads are steady or increasing and save up to 20% on token costs, the company said. Business leaders can also set monthly caps on AI spend.
  • “As AI takes on more complex work, business leaders face a new challenge: enabling rapid innovation using agents while protecting their margins and budgets,” the company said in the blog post.

Dive Insight:

Google joins a growing list of vendors offering AI cost management features as business leaders contend with mounting bills.

Global end-user spending on AI models and platforms is projected to increase 63% this year and CIOs are more closely monitoring their AI budgets as a result, according to a Gartner report. As agentic AI drives up costs, CIOs are focusing on controlling costs, measuring outcomes and boosting usage efficiency.

Enterprises such as Travelers Insurance are building their own internal large language models to help reduce expenses associated with more advanced frontier models. Travelers routes insurance-related queries to TravelersLLM and saves broader reasoning and coding queries for the frontier models, Mojgan Lefebvre, EVP, chief technology and operations officer at Travelers, told CIO Dive in a July interview.

As CIOs look for ways to reduce AI overhead, vendors have been quick to respond. Snowflake earlier this month made an AI cost management feature available within its Cortex AI Gateway and other AI products that automatically assigns tasks to the appropriate AI model based on quality and cost. Earlier this year, Oracle rolled out limited token bundles to better align agentic AI pricing with derived value for businesses and AWS previewed a FinOps-focused agent to investigate cost anomalies.

Rising AI costs also caught the attention of the Linux Foundation, a neutral hub for organizations to manage and scale technology projects. The organization launched the Tokenomics Foundation to develop best practices for managing enterprise AI use at scale.

Google’s introduction of AI cost management tools comes at a time of growth for Gemini Enterprise, formerly known as Vertex AI. On Tuesday, Google launched Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services and Gemini Enterprise for Legal — purpose-built agentic AI products tailored to the requirements of the financial and legal industries.

Nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies are using Gemini Enterprise, CEO Sundar Pichai told investors during the company’s Q2 2026 earnings call in July. PepsiCo, one of Google’s enterprise customers, uses Gemini Enterprise for AI and analytics. Meanwhile, Macy’s taps into the product for enhanced commerce experiences.

“All of this momentum is driving growth in our paid token usage,” Pichai said. “Nearly 500 cloud customers have each processed more than 1 trillion tokens in the last year and usage is so much deeper than that. Over the last 12 months, more than 2,000 enterprises consumed over 100 billion tokens.”

As part of the AI cost management updates announced Wednesday, the vendor added the Google Cloud Pricing Calculator, which enables business leaders to estimate costs in Gemini Enterprise, as well as project spend caps and overage controls.

“To get a real return on AI, financial operations (FinOps) and cost management must evolve alongside technology, giving you clear visibility, proactive cost controls, and flexible payment models that fit your needs,” according to the blog post.
