Dive Brief:

  • McDonald’s is aiming for growth and productivity gains through a 10-year, $8.5 billion investment in speeding technology deployment, modernizing its restaurant design and improving operations, the company shared in a Wednesday announcement. The investment is part of McDonald’s > Next strategy, which launched in June 2026.
  • The fast food chain seeks to unlock restaurant efficiency improvements that could translate to roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow benefits for franchisees through deployment of the company’s generative AI-enabled ArchIQ at scale, the company said.
  • “McDonald’s has the unmatched scale, customer insights, brand loyalty and operational capabilities to not only adapt to the next wave of change in our industry, but to turn it into an advantage,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said in the announcement.

Dive Insight:

The fast food chain’s McDonald’s > Next strategy builds on capabilities enabled by the company’s technology modernization journey over the last six years.

The Accelerating the Arches initiative, launched in 2020, set McDonald’s on a path to modernize its technology infrastructure. It also led the company to create common technology platforms, a single enterprise data foundation and operating system across more than 46,000 restaurants.

As a result, McDonald’s has since grown systemwide sales by roughly $40 billion and operating income by more than $3 billion, Kempczinski told investors during the company’s Q2 earnings call in August.

“We’re now close to having all our major markets on one app, one loyalty program, one pricing engine, one HR system and one finance system,” he said during the call. “This will drive cost savings, accelerate innovation, harden security and enhance stability.”

The company also plans to pool its data into a global data lake, which will let McDonald’s further capitalize on AI, Kempczinski added.

McDonald’s is already deploying the technology, including ArchIQ, its AI-enabled drive thru ordering system that rolled out earlier this year to select locations. The company plans to scale ArchIQ as part of the $8.5 billion investment announced Wednesday.

“In drive-thru, we’ve modernized operations and invested in technologies that have improved accuracy and reduced service times,” Kempczinski said in August.

McDonald’s previously attempted to implement automated ordering alongside IBM as a technology partner, but shut down the project in June 2024.
