Prior to his time with networking rival Juniper where he most recently served as COO of Americas Enterprise Sales, Joe Spencer held senior roles within the partner organizations of Amazon Web Services, Zscaler, and Cisco Systems.

Extreme Networks has brought on networking veteran Joe Spencer as senior vice president of global channel and strategic initiatives.

The networking specialist has had an empty channel chief seat since January 2024 when global channel leader Scott Peterson moved on to a new role as CRO of NaaS specialist Nitel after nearly two years at the helm.

Spencer, in his new role, has been tasked with building and leading global channel sales teams and powering growth through strategic alliances, channel partners, resellers, and distributors. He’ll be driving strategy, implementation, and execution of Extreme’s go-to-market channel sales motions and programs, according to Morrisville, N.C.-based Extreme Networks.

Spencer (pictured above) will report directly to Extreme Chief Commercial Officer Norman Rice, the company said.

The longtime tech executive has an impressive tenure in the networking space and is no stranger to the partner organizations of some of the largest tech companies. Prior to Extreme, Spencer served as COO, Americas enterprise sales at Juniper Networks, where he was responsible for channel sales and enterprise programs. During his time with the company, he doubled Juniper’s validating pipeline and drove year-over-year new logo growth, according to Extreme.

Spencer, before his time at networking rival Juniper Networks, held senior roles within the partner organizations of Amazon Web Services, Zscaler, and Cisco Systems, the latter of which he spent more than 17 years.

“The networking industry is at a critical turning point, with AI reshaping expectations and customers under pressure to deliver more with fewer resources. Extreme is leaning into this shift — launching Platform ONE to empower both enterprises to unlock productivity and MSPs to benefit from flexible and scalable commercial models. I’m excited to join a company that’s not just talking about transformation but actively enabling partners to thrive through innovative platforms and go to market motions,” Spencer said in a statement on his new appointment.
