Gopal’s appointment signals that Ahold Delhaize is ready to begin doing more with AI in the U.S.
He brings more than 25 years of experience leading large-scale digital, data and AI transformations, according to the press release, serving most recently as chief data and analytics officer at Eli Lilly and Company as well as Walgreens Boots Alliance. In both of these roles, he oversaw the implementation of enterprise-wide data and AI strategy, the development and rollout of advanced analytics and AI solutions, and the modernization of data platforms, the company added.
“Vipin brings deep expertise in data, analytics and AI, along with a strong track record of transforming organizations at scale,” said CIO Ann Dozier, to whom Gopal will report. “As we continue to modernize our digital, data and technology capabilities, his leadership will be instrumental in helping us build a strong data center of excellence and unlock differentiated value for our customers, brands and associates.”
Gopal’s resume also includes serving in senior leadership roles at Humana, Cigna, United Technologies Corporation and Honeywell, per the announcement.
At ADUSA, Gopal said he will work to “unlock new value through data, analytics and AI by enabling smarter decisions, greater efficiency and better experiences for customers and associates.”
While Ahold Delhaize has more publicly highlighted its AI developments in Europe, ADUSA has a robust e-commerce presence for Gopal to lean into. The grocery company’s U.S. division saw online sales increase 14.3% during Q1, marking the eighth consecutive quarter of double-digit online sales growth.
Meanwhile, Ahold Delhaize discussed during its latest earnings call numerous AI initiatives underway on its European side of the business. The grocery company’s Dutch and Belgian e-commerce platform, Bol, is expanding its suite of AI-powered tools, while Netherlands-based Albert Heijn’s store associate app continues to use AI to “serve as the store’s brain, reading every signal and orchestrating work across people, systems and devices, including electronic shelf labels,” Ahold Delhaize President and CEO Frans Muller told investors last week.
