Tech sector continues to shed workers amid AI shift

Dive Brief:

  • Tech sector hiring contracted by about 14,700 workers in August, according to CompTIA analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data published Friday. By contrast, companies across the economy added 86,000 tech workers to their ranks last month.
  • The dip in tech sector hiring — which reversed the gains reported last month — could be a reflection of the layoffs disclosed by U.S.-based technology companies in recent months, CompTIA said.
  • Unemployment among IT professionals across all sectors of the economy ticked up to 3.1% from 2.8% in July even as the national average held steady at 4.1%.

Dive Insight:

Tech sector businesses have been steadily reworking their operating structures amid efforts to capitalize on booming demand for AI services.

Companies in the sector lead in announced hires in 2026 at just over 19,000, according to an analysis by Challenger, Gray & Christmas. But it also leads in headcount trims with more than 155,000 cuts, accounting for 29% of all job cuts announced this year.

“The tech sector is still generally shedding jobs,” said Daniel Zhao, chief economist at Glassdoor. “In fact, I think things are probably worse for the tech sector than they were during the 2008 crisis with respect to job opportunities.” Employment in the tech sector has dipped by 4% from its 2022 peak as of July, according to Zhao.

Big tech’s hiring lull comes as top vendors fuel the deployment of AI services, expand compute infrastructure and shift resources to compete over enterprise spending. Globally, enterprises will spend more than $64 billion on AI services, most of that embedded within existing platforms, according to Gartner projections.

As priorities change, demand for AI skills is booming. CompTIA estimated there were 320,000 active job postings in August that require AI know-how, up 4.5% from the prior month.

The findings indicate “employers are moving beyond AI experimentation and increasingly incorporating AI into business operations, creating demand for workers who can apply AI tools, manage AI-enabled workflows and support AI-driven initiatives,” according to CompTIA.

Ongoing shifts in tech hiring dynamics means CIOs have to continue to find ways to help their organizations prepare and adapt.

“Technologies are rapidly evolving,” Zhao said. “It feels like every month, AI capabilities advance or change in some way, and so it is important to be flexible in the short term, but also know what you’re driving toward in the long term.”
