US Data Center Capacity Will ‘Double’ Despite ‘Local’ Concerns; Neoclouds Offer Channel Opportunity

America’s data center capacity will double over the next three years with over 700 data centers already in the pipeline to support 45 gigawatts of new capacity, according to a Synergy Research Group analyst.

America’s data center capacity will double in the next three years driven by aggressive hyperscalers—like AWS and Google—building out their data center footprint with over 700 data centers already in the pipeline in the U.S. alone.

“The U.S. will continue to account for over half of the world’s data center capacity, and total U.S. capacity will double over the next three years,” said John Dinsdale, chief analyst and research director for Synergy Research Group, in an email to CRN.

Synergy’s data shows that the more than 700 U.S.-based data center facilities that are in the pipeline will support 45 gigawatts of new capacity over the next few years.

“Constrained power availability and local protests are getting a lot of attention when it comes to planning large new data centers—and rightfully so,” said Dinsdale. “However, the fact remains that the industry needs to be aggressively growing capacity in order to keep up with burgeoning demand for AI services, and many new major data centers will be coming online over the coming years.”

Various issues may cause planned data center locations to change, but that will have little impact on overall U.S. growth, he said.

U.S. Data Center Capacity Growth And Neocloud Channel Opportunity

The bulk of new data center capacity will be from hyperscale operators such as Google and AWS building new facilities, as well as from colocation firms and enterprises, thanks, in part, to the growth of neoclouds.

Neoclouds are emerging as a rapidly scaling category of cloud infrastructure, purpose-built to deliver data center services and GPU-centric computing for AI workloads. Neocloud leaders include Nebius, Lambda and CoreWeave.

Data center all-star channel partner World Wide Technology sees growing opportunities in the data center market as client demand increases for compute and GPU services.

WWT’s Chris Campbell said demand for data center services—including at the edge, in hybrid cloud environments, as well as GPU-as-a-Service offerings—is high.

“We saw a couple of years ago that clients wanted more data center availability, so we started conversations [with neoclouds]. So now we’re partners with Nebius and CoreWeave and Lambda and Vultr, and we have a partner in Australia called Sharon AI that we’re also partnering with, as well as a couple in the U.K.,” said Campbell, senior director of AI data center facilities and hybrid AI infrastructure at St. Louis-based WWT.

As more capacity comes online in the U.S. and abroad, Campbell said WWT sees new data center and AI sales opportunities.

For example, the neocloud market is scaling at an unprecedented pace, reaching $9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, up 223 percent year over year, according to data from Synergy.

Campbell said AI workloads are different than traditional workloads because they require a higher level of power for that compute.

“So if you’re a channel partner and you have customers that are looking for these types of services—whether it’s a hosted service, a neocloud service, etc.—there’s opportunities to provide those chips and data center services for clients right now,” said Campbell. “We certainly want to be able to provide all the enterprise-grade infrastructure and those services for our clients.”

Data Center Developers Face Local Concerns

Synergy’s Dinsdale said rising local concerns over data center sustainability and energy costs “are crimping many new plans for data centers.”

“But it is also clear that .. that booming demand will continue to drive aggressive capacity growth,” he said.

Over the next five years, the U.S. will continue to account for well over half of the world’s operational data center capacity.

A total of seven hyperscale companies—including Amazon, Google and Microsoft—are driving much of that growth as they build out their U.S. AI campuses. He also said there are another 67 companies that are building large data centers or campuses in America.

Synergy’s data is based on quarterly data on over 320 individual companies, while other analysis is based on Synergy’s tracking of the data center hardware market.
