GuidePoint Security’s Mark Thornberry Promoted To Chief Business Officer For AI Platform, Hyperscaler Push

Thornberry, who has overseen GuidePoint’s vendor relationships group for the past four years, tells CRN the new role aims to boost ‘critical partnerships’ with leading AI platforms, hyperscalers and venture capital firms.

GuidePoint Security announced Thursday it has promoted vendor partnerships leader Mark Thornberry to the role of chief business officer, as the cybersecurity powerhouse aims to accelerate its work with top AI platforms, hyperscalers and emerging startups, the solution provider told CRN exclusively.

In an interview with CRN, Thornberry said the promotion represents an expansion of the role he’s held for the past four years leading GuidePoint’s vendor relationships group. As chief business officer, he is aiming to boost GuidePoint’s partnerships in key segments in the AI and hyperscaler market, as well as relationships with venture capital firms.

For Herndon, Va.-based GuidePoint, No. 32 on CRN’s Solution Provider 500 for 2026, the move is ultimately a signal that “there are some key partnerships that are just going to continue to get additional focus and investment,” Thornberry said.

“In order to scale even further—beyond the way that already have organically—we do need to organize and build around some critical partnerships in a meaningful and planned and thoughtful way,” he told CRN.

After joining GuidePoint Security in 2020 as director of strategic alliances, Thornberry received a series of promotions—including to vice president for vendor management in 2022 and then, in 2024, to his most recent role as senior vice president for partnerships.

Thornberry said he’ll continue to oversee the solution provider’s vendor relationships management unit, which engages with GuidePoint’s 1,100 vendor partners, while taking on the broader responsibility for deepening priority relationships with AI platforms and hyperscalers.

The new role will see Thornberry reporting to GuidePoint CEO Scott Rachford. A longtime executive at GuidePoint, Rachford moved up from regional partner for the North Central region to CEO in July, succeeding GuidePoint founder Michael Volk in the role.

AI Surge

While GuidePoint’s AI strategy has been front and center for many years now, the solution provider sees a major opportunity to strengthen its work with leading AI platforms, according to Thornberry. Many of the platforms have been developing their technologies in ways that are transformative for cybersecurity, such as with the release this year of cyber-specific models from Anthropic and OpenAI.

Even as GuidePoint has already embraced the intersection of AI and security across its business, “our relationship and connection to the AI model providers themselves needs more attention and focus,” Thornberry said.

Likewise, GuidePoint’s hyperscaler partnerships will receive additional investment, he said, while the solution provider will seek to deepen its relationships with venture capital and private equity firms, as well.

On the whole, “it’s an ecosystem. The hyperscaler and AI piece, the VC piece, the vendor piece—it’s all interconnected in several different ways,” Thornberry said.

What GuidePoint is targeting, through Thornberry’s promotion to chief business officer, is “just having someone charged with having a broader strategy around all of those things, instead of in siloes,” he said.

Early-Stage Partnerships

GuidePoint’s interactions with VC and private equity firms have increased significantly over the past 18 months, leading to opportunities to increasingly work with security startups at the very early stages of their development, according to Thornberry.

Frequently, GuidePoint now receives invitations to comment on—and even help design—some of the most promising new startups in the security space, he said.

For instance, GuidePoint began collaborating with agentic security operations startup 7AI while the company was still developing its initial technology, and has been working closely with the startup all along the way, Thornberry said.

Founded in 2024, 7AI raised a $130 million Series A funding round in December 2025, which was the largest Series A in cybersecurity industry history at the time.

Rapid Development

Meanwhile, the speed at which startups are coming to market is also bringing additional demands for GuidePoint’s partnerships group, he noted.

In the past, GuidePoint would often have more time to develop its work with a new startup as the company gradually built its business, Thornberry said. However, emerging vendors are increasingly ready for a substantial engagement almost from the get-go.

“Now it’s like, they’re ready to go right now. When they press go, they’re launching with us,” Thornberry said. “It’s a lot more labor-intensive to be able to do that, than it was a few years ago. And then the volume is wild—in a really exciting way.”

Working alongside GuidePoint’s other divisions such as engineering and sales, Thornberry said his team has also helped to partner with vendors such as Wiz, Cribl and Abnormal AI at an early point in their development, according to Thornberry.

With the expanded role for Thornberry, his group will continue to oversee relationships with emerging companies all the way through major vendor partnerships including CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler and Proofpoint.

The reality is that in this fast-moving environment, “you have to be more thoughtful and measured, in terms of how and where you’re partnering—but without changing the fabric and DNA of GuidePoint,” he said.

‘More To Capture’

Before joining GuidePoint in 2020, Thornberry held channel roles at companies including Lacework, Cisco and OpenDNS. Earlier roles included sales positions at WatchGuard Technologies and CDW.

For his next phase as chief business officer, Thornberry said there is a clear message that GuidePoint is looking to invest to bolster its partnerships in the most important segments of security and AI advancement today.

Ultimately, “as good of a job as we’ve done, there’s a ton more that we can go capture,” he said. “I think that this is a huge bet on that.”
